Abstract
Vibrio species are natural inhabitants of aquatic environments, and the increasing consumption of especially uncooked seafoods may increase the occurrence of Vibrio infections.
From August 1990 to July 1992 we isolated V. alginolyticus, V. cholerae rae non-01, .V parahaemoly$icus and V. vulnificus from blood, sputum and pus cultures of 5 patients. Four patients had liver diseases, diabetes or bronchial asthma. Two patients has eaten raw fish and another 1 patient had an eye injury in a salt water prior to admission.
It is concluded that both physicians and microbiologists should therefore consider Vibrio species in the differential diagnosis of the infections with exposures to salt water or raw fish, and appropriate means should be employed for the identification of such organisms.
